Regulation of Growth and Flowering by Low Temperature Treatment in Bletilla striata

Abstract
The effect of low temperature treatment was examined to develop the forcing and retarding culture system. When the pseudobulbs of Bletilla striata dug before Oct. 1 were treated at 5¡É for 60 days, they showed the poor shoot growth and did not flower. However, the pseudobulbs dug after Oct. 15 showed the better shoot growth and flowering compared with Oct. 1. The pseudobulbs of Bletilla striata were dug in Oct. 15, and then were treated at 0, 5, and 10¡É for 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 days. In the pseudobulbs nontreated at low temperature, leaves did not grow, and flowers were not open at all. bays to leaf emergence and flowering were shortened with increasing low temperature treatment period. The pseudobulbs treated at 0¡É over 90 days and 5¡É or 10¡É over 45 days showed normal flowering and high flowering rate of 90%. When the pseudobulbs treated at 0¡É over 210 days and 5¡É for 240 days were planted in greenhouse, they exhibited poor leaf growth and failed to flower because of high temperature. Treatments at 5¡É for 180 and 210 days showed normal leaf growth and flowering.
